Film

I was trained as an animator, so I take a hand-made, visually-driven approach to filmmaking. I often shoot in highly textural archaic media, including 16mm, Super 8, DV, and VHS, merging these with digital processes. I build complex in-camera effects and construct atmospheric imagery with elaborate sets and costumes. These projects are vehicles for collaboration. I am fortunate to work with a small group of amazing creative people as we build ambitious long-term projects over many years. Below is a selection of our work.

Saints of the Old City

This feature-length film constructs and deconstructs a founding mythology for the city of Brockton. Following a nameless, wordless protagonist, known only as the “Green Figure,” through a series of mysterious encounters, we discovers his role in the cycle of destruction and rebirth the city is forced to relive.

This is a work in progress. Shot on 16mm and Super 8.

Accretion

A figure stalks the banks of the Chelsea River, building an underwater henge from parts of the city that have washed ashore.

Shot on Super 8.

Iron Mullein

This is a project I made with my sister, Alaina Mahoney, who is also a multi-disciplinary artist. This film documents a sculpture and performance.

Alaina collected invasive mullein plants from a post-industrial site. She coated the plants in ceramic, burned the plants away in a kiln, then poured molten iron into the cavity, reproducing the plants down to their finest detail. Painted to match the landscape, wearing custom workwear dyed with rust, and using handmade tools, we re-planted the iron mulleins back into the original environment, where trespassers on the site might encounter these strange replacements among the surrounding flora.
